Surfer OK After Volusia County's 1st Shark Bite of 2017

A 58-year-old man is okay after a shark bit his foot while he was surfing off New Smyrna Beach Monday morning, beach patrol officials said. It was the first shark bite reported in Volusia County this year.

A spokeswoman for Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue, Tammy Marris, said the man was about 30 to 40 yards offshore when the shark attacked, and his injuries were treated afterward at the scene. New Smyrna Beach is south of Daytona Beach on Florida's east coast.

Fifteen shark bites were reported in Volusia County last year.
