Florida City to Deploy Drone to Catch Wild Coyotes

A Florida city's search for wild coyotes is going high-tech. Trappers are sending a drone above Indian Harbour Beach's largest parks looking for dens.

A coyote snatched and likely killed a pet cat on New Year's Day. The incident was captured on a security camera.

Florida Today reports city officials met with wildlife trapper Leo Cross who recommended the high-tech surveillance.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission estimates adult coyotes can patrol home ranges of up to 12,000 acres.

Cross plans to set up eight trail cameras to find the coyotes routes. On Monday, a tech company will deploy the drone looking for freshly moved dirt.

He doesn't plan to kill the coyotes but will let wildlife officials relocate the animals and is coordinating with a rancher for a safe drop-off site.
