Florida Man Accused of Intentionally Hitting Elderly Volunteer With Car at School

A Florida man was arrested after he intentionally struck an elderly man with his car at a Pasco County elementary school Tuesday morning.

Lawrence Dean Franklin, 34, was arrested on a charge of aggravated battery with a vehicle on a person over 65 years old following the incident at Calusa Elementary School, Pasco County Sheriff's Office officials said.

Officials said Franklin was in the drop-off loop at the school when he refused to go into the proper lane. William Denamen, a 79-year-old volunteer, was assisting in the drop off loop and stood in front of Franklin's car to show Franklin he was serious and had to leave, officials said.

Franklin refused to comply and took his foot off the brake, letting his Cadillac CTS hit Denamen, officials said. Denamen suffered a minor injury to his leg and had a noticeable limp, officials said.

Franklin said he "felt threatened" by Denamen when he told him to move to another lane, officials said.

Jail records didn't list Franklin, and it's unknown if he's hired an attorney.
