Former UM, NFL Star Michael Irvin Being Investigated in Fort Lauderdale Sex Battery Case

Police in Florida are investigating sexual battery allegations made by a woman against former NFL star Michael Irvin.

Fort Lauderdale police confirmed Wednesday that the Hall of Fame receiver's name was listed on a sexual battery incident report. The report says the alleged encounter involving Irvin took place at a Fort Lauderdale hotel on March 22.

A police spokeswoman said no other details were available. Irvin has not been charged with anything.

Irvin’s lawyer, Larry Friedman, told NBC 6 that his client was "blindsided" by the allegations when he found out about them yesterday.

"Michael absolutely denies these allegations. These are fake allegations," Friedman said in a telephone interview from his Dallas office. "Unfortunately, this has become a hazard of being a celebrity."

Friedman said he has reached out to Fort Lauderdale Police, saying he and Irvin will "answer any questions and fully cooperate with the investigation." Friedman said his client was in South Florida at the time of the alleged incident to attend a sporting event for relatives as well as attend the birthday of an aunt.

The 51-year-old Irvin is a Fort Lauderdale native who was a prep star at St. Thomas Aquanis before he starred for the University of Miami and the Dallas Cowboys. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2007 and has worked as an analyst on the NFL Network.

In 2011, Irvin settled a woman's lawsuit accusing him of sexual assault.
