Free Tix For Jobless Marlins Fans

Team hopes stimulus plan will fill seats

The attendance-challenged Marlins are rolling out their own version of a stimulus package this season, designed to draw down-on-their-luck fans to the ballpark.

The Marlins on Friday announced that unemployed South Florida residents could receive four free tickets to some Monday home games this season. To collect the tickets, fans must bring their government-issued unemployment documents to Dolphin Stadium.

On some Saturday games, the Marlins will also give one fan up to $2,500 for mortgage or rent payments. At two Saturday games, June 20 against the Yankees and Sept. 26 against the Mets, one fan will receive up to $15,000 to be used for their mortgage or rent.

Florida's unemployment rate rose to 9.4 percent in February, its highest unemployment since 1976.
