Historic Everglades Lodge Demolished

Wreckers have torn down the landmark hotel in Everglades National Park and finding funding for a $20 million makeover is looking bleak.

Flamingo Lodge, the area's lone hotel for a half century, has been in ruins since the rough hurricane season of 2005.

Park managers recently pitched a smaller and storm-resistant hotel as a candidate for stimulus funding from the Obama administration.

The proposal didn't make the cut mainly because rebuilding plans aren't far enough along yet.

The lodge, which overlooks Florida Bay, is usually packed in the winter and typically half full during the summer months.
