Man Arrested After Firing Gun at Deputies in Key Largo

Officials say a man who was involved in a domestic dispute shot at Monroe County deputies who responded to a call for help.

The deputies were not injured and 57-year-old Robert Schminky was arrested early Wednesday.

Deputies Diosvel Fumero and Angelina Lubin told authorities that when they arrived at the scene late Tuesday they saw Schminky standing behind some bushes pointing a shotgun at the ground.

The deputies took ordered him to drop the gun. They heard two shots and saw the muzzle flash as he apparently fired toward the ground. Before they could stop him, he ran.

Other deputies helped chase him down as he fired at them twice. A Florida Highway Patrol trooper involved in the pursuit was also shot at, officials said. Schminky was eventually arrested.

Officials said Schminky will face three counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, as well as other charges. It was not known whether Schminky has a lawyer.
