A man armed with a knife was taken into custody after he jumped onto a woman's hood as she drove on the Palmetto Expressway in northwest Miami-Dade Tuesday night, authorities said.
Florida Highway Patrol officials said the man jumped on the hood of the Mercedes as it was going eastbound on the Palmetto near 57th Avenue.
The man rode on the hood for about a mile with a knife in his mouth until the frightened woman reached a trooper and pulled over.
"The lady clearly states she was in fear for her life," FHP spokesman Joe Sanchez said. "She wasn't going to stop until she saw an officer, she happened to drive one mile east and saw several state troopers working off duty here and she pulled and got the assistance she needed."
There was apparently an altercation between the man and a trooper and the trooper used a Taser to subdue the man. At this point, investigators believe the man was under the influence of drugs or possibly mentally ill.
The man's broken down car was found near 67th Avenue, authorities said. He was taken to a hospital but wasn't seriously injured. The woman wasn't injured.
