Miami Beach Police Surprise Drivers With Holiday Gift Cards

Drivers in Miami Beach thought they were in store for a ticket Tuesday morning, but were instead treated to gift cards.

Police spent Tuesday morning pulling drivers over along Meridian Avenue and handing out gift cards for motorists doing the right thing.

It's the first time the department has taken part in the activity, and it took many drivers by surprise.

"My legs are a little tingly," motorist Cristina Bustamante told NBC 6. "I thought I was going to get a ticket!"

The department handed out $500 worth of gift cards to twenty unsuspecting drivers as a reward for following the rules of the road.

“Those red and blue lights flashing when we look in that rear-view mirror – can give everyone the jitters," Ernesto Rodriguez of MDPD said. "What we decided to do today was eliminate those jitters and turn those jitters into smiles."

The initial confusion and jitters soon gave way to smiles for the lucky motorists.

"I think that's really, really nice," Bustamante said.
