Officer Struck by Motorcyclist in Busy Miami Beach

An officer was struck by a motorcyclist Friday in busy Miami Beach during spring break.

A motor officer attempted to stop a motorcyclist in the area of 7th Street and Collins Avenue, where the motorcyclist struck him, according to Miami Beach police.

The subject was taken into custody. He was identified as 40-year-old Garrett Flores. He is being charged with aggravated battery against a law enforcement officer, possession of cocaine, resisting arrest, reckless driving, and driving with a suspended license.

The officer was identified as Philip Elmore, a 13-year veteran with the department. He remains in the hospital, "in pain," but is expected to recover, the department said.

The 700 block of Collins Avenue was closed to all traffic.

Miami Beach police are gearing up for another busy spring break weekend. Mayor Dan Gelber promised a step up in law enforcement since residents complained about spring break visitors causing chaos.
