Miami-Dade Clerk Sentenced in 2010 Crowbar Slaying

Ragheb Sulaiman pleads guilty as part of agreement supported by victim's family

A Miami-Dade County store clerk on Friday was sentenced to seven years in prison in the 2010 crowbar slaying of a customer.

Ragheb Sulaiman, 26, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the killing of 34-year-old Akil Larue Oliver at Quick Shop Food Store at 9729 SW 168th St., around the West Perrine area.

“I don't hate you at all,” OIiver’s mother, Ruby Mosely, told Sulaiman in court Friday. “Today I get some justice. The only thing I want to say to you, 'May God bless you and keep you and you're in my prayers.'"

Friday’s sentencing was part of a plea deal that Oliver's family supported, said Sulaiman’s defense attorney, Richard Sharpstein.  The families of the victim and the defendant “got together” and “raised forgiveness,” Sharpstein said.

The deadly attack happened Nov. 10, 2010, when Oliver entered the Quick Shop and yelled at Sulaiman and his brother, Nabil Sulaiman, also a store clerk, according to a Miami-Dade police arrest report. Oliver yelled insults at the clerks, telling them they should return to their native country, the report said.

“The victim’s rage was the result of the victim believing that the business owner owed him a small amount of money,” the report said.

Oliver left the store and when he later returned to the business, Nabil Sulaiman armed himself with a bottle and hit Oliver with it, police said.

As Oliver tried to defend himself, Ragheb Sulaiman armed himself with a crowbar and struck Oliver in the head with it, police said. Oliver died from his injuries, leading police to arrest the two siblings, police said.

Friday, Mosely said, “I have no malice toward the family or the guy that killed my son. The only thing I ever wanted was justice, and justice was served today.”

Nabil Sulaiman, 21, who bonded out of jail on the charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, reportedly fled the country last year.
