Mom Whose Son Shot Friend Avoids Prison

Hollywood mother whose gun was used in shooting gets probation

The Hollywood mom whose teen son shot and killed his friend while playing with her gun won't serve time behind bars.

Shari Edwards was sentenced in a Broward courtroom Thursday to four years probation and will serve 100 hours of community service.

Edwards had been charged with culpable negligence in the April 28, 2010 shooting of 13-year-old Daniel Torres, and was facing five years in prison.

Torres was with Jeff Dilworth, Edwards' 14-year-old son, when the two found her 9mm pistol fully loaded in her nightstand. Dilworth told police that he watched Torres unload the gun then took it from him. He squeezed the trigger and the bullet still in the chamber struck Torres in the head.

Dilworth was charged with manslaughter and was sentenced last July to nine months in a juvenile detention center. He had been facing as much as 30 years behind bars.

Edwards will also have to surrender the gun involved in the shooting.
