New Clues in Miami Teen Hit-And-Run Death

The family of a Miami teenager who was killed in a hit-and-run crash hopes new clues will help find the driver responsible for the girl's death.

Dereka Banks, 18, was walking near Northwest 13th Avenue and 54th Street on February 28th around 8:20 p.m. when police say a car hit her and kept on going, leaving Dereka in the street to die.

The teen was hospitalized with a multitude of broken bones and swelling of the brain. Twelve days later, she died.

"You are a monster," said Dereka's brother, Derrick Banks, holding back tears. "You left her there to die. You didn't turn around to see was she okay."

"Whoever did this to my child, they don't know what they have done to my family" added Dereka's grieving mother, Veronica Banks.

New surveillance video from the night of the crash shows a green 2008 Toyota Corolla headed westbound on Northwest 54th Street pass 13th Avenue, as Dereka's body lay crumpled in the street.

Miami Police were able to identify the car through the plastic cover of the fog light on the right side.

"If you're involved in a crash, period, you need to stop, render aid to someone," Det. Joe Kennedy of the Miami Police Department reminds motorists. "If this was you on the other side of the fence and you were the one that was hurt, what would you expect that other individual to do for you?"

The car has damage to front right side of the windshield and right side of hood. On the night of the crash, surveillance video shows that the car had a for sale sign in the driver's backseat window, and another for sale sign in the rear window.

Miami Police are investigating the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
