No Homework: Florida School District Cuts Home Assignments for Students

A handful of changes are coming to one Florida school district including mandatory recess and P.E. and no homework.

Traditional homework will disappear for elementary students in the Marion County Public Schools district beginning in August when classes resume.

“Instead of working on classroom assignments at home, we want students reading at home for 20 minutes every evening and we want you to read with them,” said Superintendent Dr. Heidi Maier in a message to parents.

Maier says the change will help build relationships and increase parent involvement.

School board officials say they want students to choose their own books to read for deeper content and comprehension.

"We know that when students self-select their own text, they read with deeper meaning, with passion and that love of reading is inspired in them," said Maier.
