The Palm Beach Sheriff's Office is investigating after a deputy was forced to shoot and kill a pit bull this weekend after he was allegedly attacked by the dog.

Officials told NBC affiliate WPTV that deputies responded to a call at a gas station off Royal Palm Boulevard and Okeechobee Boulevard on Sunday when the attack took place. They say deputies were trying to subdue a man after he tried fighting them when the man's pit bull began to attack one of the deputies.

That deputy, who has not been identified, pulled out his gun and shot the dog, who died at the scene, while the deputy was taken to the hospital for a number of bite wounds.

The man, who has also not been identified, was taken into custody and charged with resisting arrest.
