A man who had been reported missing and endangered was shot and killed by deputies during a confrontation at an apartment complex in Weston Monday morning, officials said.

The incident happened in the 1400 block of Capri Lane at the 10X Weston apartments west of Interstate 75.

Broward Sheriff's Office officials said deputies responded to the area shortly after 9 a.m. after receiving reports of a possible suspicious person.

"When they encountered the individual, he got out of the vehicle. He was armed with a weapon. He was given verbal commands to drop that weapon. He did not. Instead, he charged at the deputies, causing one of the deputies to fire his weapon," BSO spokesperson Veda Coleman-Wright said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. He was later identified as 55-year-old Mario Bonilla, a Weston resident.

BSo had issued a news release on Sunday that said he was missing and endangered.

Aerial footage from Chopper 6 showed the man's body on the ground at the scene, which was closed off by deputies.

The footage also showed two people sitting on the ground nearby comforting each other.

No other injuries were reported.

A woman who identified herself as Bonilla's mother-in-law said he had been missing since Saturday and had left a suicide note.

"They just said that he had a shootout with the police," Wanda Cordero said. "I don’t understand, he wasn’t a violent person. We never knew he had a gun at all and we don’t know what’s happening. It’s a total shock for us, for the family, for my daughter’s family. We don’t know anything yet.”

Cordero said a witness said Bonilla had been sitting in a car at the complex.

"I don’t know why this happened. I don’t know why. He is the nicest person. Last week he was at home and had dinner with me," she said.

Officials with the City of Weston said there was no threat to the area but that it was closed off until the investigation was complete.
