A robbery suspect was taken into custody after a police pursuit on Interstate 95 in Broward County Tuesday.
The high-speed chase began in Miami-Dade, when an officer spotted a car that was reportedly involved in an April 7 robbery. The officer tried to stop the car but the driver fled and got onto I-95 northbound, officials said.
The chase ended with a crash in the northbound lanes of I-95 near Hillsboro Boulevard. A man was seen being placed in handcuffs at the scene, with a badly damaged silver sedan nearby.
Ramon Umpierre, 42, was booked into West Palm jail, Miami-Dade police said. He has a non-bondable warrant out of Tallahassee and is a registered sex offender.
Dozens of Broward Sheriff's Office deputies and officers from other agencies were at the scene.
The man and a female passenger in the car were taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution, officials said.
