A person was given a citation for harvesting a protected sandbar shark in Pompano Beach, authorities said.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said Wednesday that two officers responded to the Pompano Beach Pier on the night of Dec. 26 after Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies got a call about someone harvesting a large shark there.
The unidentified subject was trying to hide the shark in bushes at the base of the pier when two BSO deputies arrived, according to a FWC report.
Officers Nathan Brock and Nicole Basford went to the scene and identified the slain shark as a sandbar shark, which are a prohibited species to harvest, the report said.
The person was issued a citation, and the shark was seized as evidence.
