School Board to Review Controversial Name Calling Policy

The Miami-Dade School Board will review a policy that doesn't allow name calling and restricted a person's right to criticize the board and its employees.

The district's decorum policy was the subject of an NBC 6 Investigation in early November showing how speakers were cut off if they said names in a critical way.

The board chair, Perla Tabares Hantman, told NBC 6 Investigators she was doing nothing wrong when censoring names and was following policy.

School Board attorney, Walter Harvey, appeared to disagree.

"I want to stress there's never been a blanket prohibition on the use of names," Harvey said.

In a Wednesday meeting, Hantman asked for a review of the policy citing the NBC 6 investigation.

The November 23 board meeting approving a "thorough" review was the first since the investigation aired on both NBC 6 and Telemundo 51.

The review is expected to be completed by mid-December.
