Juvenile Hospitalized in NW Miami-Dade Shooting

A juvenile was rushed to the hospital after a shooting in northwest Miami-Dade Thursday.

The shooting happened in the area of Northwest 2nd Avenue and Northwest 85th Street. Miami-Dade Police said the male victim was shot in the upper torso.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials said the victim was taken as a pediatric trauma alert to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.

The victim's mother identified the teenager as 17-year-old Joma Zephyr. The victim's mother told NBC 6 they moved a few days ago from the location where her son was shot.

The victim's mother said Zephyr got off the bus after school, walked over to a park. That's where, she says, he got shot. Her son later tried to run back to their old home because they still had friends that lived there.

The teen's mom says Zephyr was shot twice in the arm and lower abdomen. Now, her biggest concern is making sure her son is okay and that the shooter is found.

Police have not confirmed the mother's account.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
