Student Brought Unloaded Gun to North Andrews Gardens Elementary School

Authorities are investigating after a student brought an unloaded gun to an Oakland Park Elementary school Tuesday.

Broward School Board officials said the student brought the gun to North Andrews Gardens Elementary School at 345 Northeast 56th Street.

A couple students saw the gun and reported it, and school officials found the gun in the child's backpack.

A 5th grader who spoke to NBC 6 described the firearm as a "little beige and white gun". The 10-year-old said he saw the student pull the gun out of his backpak. "I was scared," he said.

Parents rushed to the school terrified and upset. "It's terrible news when someone says someone came to school with a gun. The first thing you think of is if my kids are safe," Carmen Maldonado said.

Officials confirmed there was no threat to the school or any students and there was no lockdown. School was operating as normal.

Broward Sheriff's Office officials said they're investigating how the student got the gun.

The Broward School District said it is not sure what will happen to the student or his parents. District officials are waiting to hear their side of the story first.
