SunPass Customers With Transponders Will Have Bills Adjusted Down

SunPass customers who have transponders will have their bill adjusted down, after many drivers reported that they were being overcharged.

A spokesperson for the Florida Department of Transportation confirmed Thursday that bills for those with transponders will be adjusted down. The spokesperson recommended customers go online or to their app to dispute charges, saying it will be faster than calling.

Customers have reported receiving hefty bills in recent weeks and are being told they have until March 31 to make the payment. One customer told WPTV he received a $768 bill in the mail, with charges of up to $16 per toll transaction dating back to June hundreds more than what the actual total should have been.

SunPass issues date back to last summer, when state transportation officials in Florida blamed the company that manages SunPass, Conduent State & Local Solutions, for an upgrade to the system that resulted in delayed and inaccurate charges. SunPass suspended posting charges in June for what was supposed to be a week during the upgrade, but charges didn't resume posting until a month later.

"The Florida Department of Transportation is continuing to work toward returning the SunPass system to its normal operating state. The Department is sending Toll-By-Plate invoices out of a total of more than 4 million," FDOT said in a statement Wednesday. "All fines and penalties will continue to be waived until no sooner than March 31st as we continue to return to normal operating conditions."
