Teen Shot and Killed in Miami Gardens

Police are investigating after a teen was shot and killed in Miami Gardens Tuesday.

The shooting happened shortly after 4 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 17600 block of Northwest 25th Avenue.

Police said an officer was nearby, heard shots fired and then came across the body. Witnesses said they heard 10 gunshots fired.

17-year-old Roderick Sweeting was pronounced dead on the scene. Sweeting had attended Miami Norland High School last year and was enrolled in American Senior High this year.

"I got the call because I took my daughter to work and I got the call he just got killed," said Derrick Smith, victim's uncle. "He was a good kid. Very quiet. 'A' student in school. I never really known him to have problems."

This wasn't the first time the family has been struck by gun violence. A bullet also killed Sweeting's brother four years ago.

"It was a freak accident. Somebody was shooting and he happened to be in the area and the bullet hit him in the back of the head," Smith explained.

Anyone with information on Tuesday's shooting is asked to contact Miami Gardens Police at 305-474-1420.
