The Pembroke Pines Police Department said a 16-year-old has turned himself in over the theft of several items, including an assault rifle, from a police cruiser.
The teen "turned himself in to the Hallandale Beach Police Department after being urged to do so by family and friends after his image was circulated by the news media," the PPPD said in a statement.
The teen, who was taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center, took the rifle, as well as a Taser and a police vest from the vehicle, police said.
The PPPD said it is working to recover stolen firearms and police gear. Anyone with information on where the stolen items could be is urged to call police.
