Toddler Hospitalized After Near-Drowning in Miramar: Firefighters

A 1-year-old toddler was rushed to the hospital Monday after nearly drowning in Miramar.

Miramar Fire Department officials confirm that the 1-year-old boy was found in a pool at a home located in the 3000 block of Island Drive in Miramar around 10:30 a.m.

Police said a family member heard screaming and made the horrifying discovery.

Miramar Police arrived at the scene and began CPR. Miramar Fire arrived shortly after, and assisted in getting a pulse back on the child.

Officials said early CPR is key in drowning cases.

"It was only because of the quick efforts of those bystanders and our rescue teams that it ended up being a drowning where someone survived," Miramar Fire Rescue's Jose Gregorisch said.

The baby boy was rushed to Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood. He is listed in critical condition, fire officials say.

Gregorisch said it's another scary reminder of  the importance of pool safety.

"You really need that combination of a pool that's locked in by a fence. You need some sort of an alarm that alerts you if a rear door is open and eyes on that child at all times," he said. "It's a combination of all those things that are going to prevent a drowning from happening."
