Father, 7-Year-Old Son Found Shot to Death Inside Pickup Truck in Miami Gardens

Police haven't released the names of the victims, but said they may have been targeted

A father and his 7-year-old son were found shot to death inside of a pickup truck in Miami Gardens, police said.

According to police, the shooting happened just before 7:15 p.m. Sunday.

Officials said the victims were traveling northbound on Northwest 37th Avenue and Northwest 207th Street, when a dark vehicle pulled up to the black truck.

Someone inside that car began shooting at the people in the truck.

The victims were later identified as 31-year-old Lavel Mucherson and his 7-year-old son Hezekiah Mucherson.

"This was a baby," said grandmother Carolyn Rolle. "We all hurting through this."

Miami Gardens police said weapons were found inside the vehicle, but they believe they were used in self-defense.

Officials believe the father and son may have been targeted. Police have not yet released any information on possible suspects.

Lavel Mucherson was the victim of two previous shootings in Miami Gardens, in July 2009 and December 2011. He was also arrested for second-degree murder in 2014 but the case was dismissed, police said.

"I am sickened to learn a 7-year-old was the victim of an apparent targeted shooting that also took the life of an adult. Our children continue to become collateral damage in the gun violence plaguing our community and nation. This is an outrage," Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho tweeted on Monday.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
