A woman has died after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver while crossing the street in Miami Thursday morning, police said.

The incident happened as the woman, identified as 49-year-old Nancy Gomez, was crossing Southwest 8th Street at LeJenue Road around 2:30 a.m., Miami Police said.

The driver of the gold Hyundai Elantra, 26-year-old Robert Vivas, fled the scene but was stopped by some witnesses and convinced to return to the scene, police said.

Gomez was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Rivas told police he was driving home from work when the incident happened. Police said DUI is not a factor in the crash.

Police charged Rivas with leaving the scene of an accident involving death. He was being held on $10,000 bond Thursday and it was unknown whether he has an attorney.
