Thomas Workout Cranks Up Crowder Rumor Mill

Thomas isn't stellar, but his groin works. Which is nice.

In their ongoing quest to turn over the roster 742 times this fall, the Dolphins continue to make moves on the practice squad and work out veteran free agents.

The latest to visit Davie is also the most interesting. Former Patriots linebacker Adalius Thomas spent Tuesday working out for the Dolphins, according to ProFootballTalk, which could indicate that Channing Crowder is headed for the injured reserve.

Crowder has been unable to practice since August 17, and Tony Sparano hasn't suggested any timetable for his return. The 26-year-old was shipped off to a specialist at the end of the month, for what was later listed as a groin injury.

Crowder did not make the trip to Buffalo, and has not been able to return to practice.

Nor has he enjoyed a truly stellar year in Miami, so perhaps the Dolphins are beginning to think about other options behind Karlos Dansby.

Problem is, there isn't much: middling Bobby Carpenter was brought on board just last week, and spring trade accessory Tim Dobbins is decent against the run. Combine the pair, and you've a pretty good backup.

Science isn't there yet, and Adalius Thomas might not be, either.

The 33-year-old did enjoy something of a breakout year in 2004 under new Dolphins defensive coordinator Mike Nolan in Baltimore, but his sack total petered out the last few seasons in New England.

So maybe the Dolphins replace Crowder, or maybe they hang on to both for a week or two: hours ago, the team released OG Andrew Hartline and TE Nathan Overbay from the practice squad, clearing the way from someone on the roster to get demoted.

Thomas spent Monday with the Jets, who appeared intent on signing him. So if nothing else, the Dolphins can pick him up in advance of their looming games with New York and New England, just for nefarious AFC funsies. The best kind of funsies, if you ask us.
