Panthers' Barkov Named Second Star of the Week

Panthers center Aleksander Barkov was named the NHL's Second Star of the Week on Monday

Florida Panthers center Aleksander Barkov was named the NHL's Second Star of the Week on Monday.

Barkov picked up three goals and four assists during last week's action for Florida. Those seven points helped the Panthers pick up two wins in three games. Florida has won four of the last five games it has played, but remains far back in the playoff standings.

The big week for Barkov was not much of a surprise for Florida, as he continues to pace the team in points. The 23-year old has 25 goals, along with 35 assists in 2018-19. Barkov is only three shy of his career-high in goals, with 22 games remaining in the schedule.

The Panthers have done a solid job in power plays this season and Barkov is a big reason why. Barkov's season totals of 11 power play goals and 24 power play points are both career highs. While Florida may ultimately miss the postseason, Barkov has been a clutch contributor over the course of the season.

Barkov is currently playing in his sixth season for the Panthers and he has already collected multiple honors in his carer. In addition to being named Second Star of the Week, Barkov has been named a finalist for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy twice in his career. Barkov was also an All-Star last season.

Florida has played well at home this season, but it will need to pick up a number of victories on the road the rest of the way. The Panthers will play 13 of their final 22 games away from Florida and will face several contending teams.

Florida's season will continue in Colorado against the Avalanche on Monday at 9:00 p.m.
