A woman driving a pickup truck into oncoming traffic on Interstate 95 near Miami Gardens Drive crashed into several cars, killing four people inside one vehicle and herself, the Florida Highway Patrol confirmed.
Four of the deceased victims have been identified as Miguel Gil-Egui of Cooper City, 52-year-old Jose Martin Labrador and 48-year-old Gisela Gil-Egui, both of Bridgeport, Conn., and 71-year-old Gisela Egui of Venezuela. Family confirmed with NBC 6 that she is the mother of Miguel Gil-Egui and Gisela Gil-Egui.
Two people, 27-year-old Katherine Warsch of Hollywood and 58-year-old Nammer Khattab of Dania Beach, were also transported to the hospital from the scene. Their conditions were believed to be non-life threatening, FHP said.
The crash occurred just before 1 a.m. on I-95 northbound near Miami Gardens Drive. According to FHP officials, a 23-year-old woman from California in a pickup truck was driving the wrong way in the northbound express lanes when she sideswiped one car and struck several others. She was killed in the crash. Her name has not been released.
FHP said the woman struck a Hyundai Sonata head-on, killing the four adults inside that vehicle. Two of them were thrown from the car onto the roadway by the impact of the crash.
"The accident was so severe that rescue had a hard time removing the bodies from the vehicle," FHP Trooper Joe Sanchez said.
In total, the crash involved five vehicles, FHP said.
All northbound lanes were shut down as crews responded to the scene. The lanes have since reopened.
There's no word on what caused the woman to drive the wrong way. The investigation is ongoing.
