Dad Found Guilty, Daughter Cleared in Kidnapping and Shooting of Daughter's Romantic Rival

Police say Neville Baker kidnapped his daughter's love rival at gunpoint, during which she was shot twice

A father accused in the kidnapping and shooting of his daughter's romantic rival was found guilty Monday, while a jury cleared his daughter of all charges.

Sunrise residents Rossaine Ann Marie Baker, 39, and Neville Antoney Baker, 67, were tried together in the Oct. 25, 2009 kidnapping and attempted murder of Nicola Brown.

The two women both had children by the same father and were romantic rivals, according to prosecutors, and police said Rossaine Baker was already facing aggravated battery charges against Brown from August 2008 at the time of the kidnapping.

Jurors debated their fate less than three weeks after Brown opened the prosecution's case by tearfully recounting her horrifying ordeal.

According to police, Neville Baker and another man kidnapped Brown and forced her into a car in the 11400 block of Lakeview Drive in Coral Springs.

Brown said the two men drove around and held her at gunpoint as she begged to be let go.

When the men told her they were going to pull over and put her in the trunk, Brown said she knew she had to act quickly.

"In my mind I'm saying, if I go in the trunk, I know I wouldn't be here today," Brown said.

She said she somehow managed to get free and make a run for it, and was shot twice in the process.

Police shortly received a call of a woman found shot in Tamarac, and Brown was airlifted to Broward General Medical Center in critical condition.

Rossaine and Neville Baker were arrested a few days later.

The third suspect, identified by police as a black male, 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-11 with a thin build and Jamaican accent, still hasn't been caught.

Both Bakers were charged with was charged with attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and armed kidnapping, and both plead not guilty.
