Ex-State Senator to Be Sentenced in Tax Evasion Case

Prosecutors seeking prison time for Mandy Dawson

Federal prosecutors are seeking prison time for a former state legislator who pleaded guilty to tax charges arising from a corruption investigation.

Prosecutors want a judge Friday to sentence former lawmaker Mandy Dawson to eight months in prison. Dawson's lawyer is seeking home confinement and no jail time because she has long suffered from drug and alcohol abuse, depression and several physical ailments.

The 56-year-old Dawson pleaded guilty to charges of tax evasion and failure to file tax returns involving nearly $30,000 in tax loss. She admitted receiving money from lobbyists, including Fort Lauderdale ophthalmologist Alan Mendelsohn who is imprisoned on corruption convictions.

A Democrat, Dawson represented parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties in the state House and Senate for 16 years. She now lives in Daytona Beach.
