Gov. Scott Promises Tax Cuts in Florida

Scott kicking off tour pushing $500 million in planned tax cuts

Florida Gov. Rick Scott is kicking off a tour pushing $500 million in planned tax cuts around the state as he heads into what could be a tough re-election fight.

Scott recently announced plans to ask legislators to cut taxes next year but hasn't specified which taxes and fees he wants to cut. He's expected to release more details at press conferences in South Florida on Tuesday.

The Republican governor says he maintained a budget surplus in 2014 and wants to use some of the extra revenue to cut taxes. Scott has sought tax cuts every year he has been in office, but his initial efforts encountered stiff resistance from fellow Republicans in the Legislature.

The proposal may also help reconnect him to the conservative base that propelled him to victory three years ago.
