A South Florida student was hospitalized Tuesday after he was slashed during a fight at a Miami Lakes school, authorities said.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials said the 18-year-old was airlifted from Barbara Goleman Senior High at 14100 Northwest 89th Avenue to Jackson Memorial Hospital. He was stabbed in the stomach, school police said.

They said the victim, a junior, and his attacker, a senior, know each other, and that just after lunch the suspect pulled a Swiss Army knife out of his pocket and stabbed the other student.

"They started boppin' and the kid pulled out a switchblade and started cuttin' the kid," sophomore Seth Nunuz said.

The injury was non-life threatening and the student was transported as a precaution, Miami-Dade Schools spokesman John Schuster said.

"He stabbed him in the kidney," student David Subil said. "Then all of a sudden I see blood all over the floor."

Sophomore Kyara Amable described the altercation as "just arguing, then it became pushing, and then punching, and then after that I left."

Police said the assailant was taken into custody right after the stabbing, but won't say why the two were fighting.

"There are some unique circumstances surrounding this case. Both of these participants have some degree of culpability here," police said.

A school district spokesperson said Tuesday night that both students involved have been suspended and will be recommended for expulsion.
