Man Shot and Killed in Front of Family in Allapattah

Miami Police investigating Sunday shooting

A single bullet turned a mundane Sunday trip to the grocery store into a tragedy in Allapattah. It was while the patriarch of the family, Jose Antonio Navarro was unloading groceries that witnesses say he lost his life.

"It was just one shot. I was lying down watching a show with my girlfriend and it was just one shot. Bam," neighbor Kevin Martinez said.

The shooting happened at the home in the area of 12th Avenue and 28th Street.

Navarro's heartbroken girlfriend Kenia Barahona, who is expecting his second child, helplessly watched the man she loved collapse in front of her. She believes Navarro may have been targeted for the chain around his neck.

"They should have taken everything, his chain, his wallet. They didn't have to kill him," Barahona said in Spanish.

She says Navarro was getting out of his car when he was approached by two men. One of them said something in English, which she didn't understand. The next thing she knew, Navarro was lying on the path leading up to his house.

Martinez described his neighbor as "a rag, just lying there."

Miami Police could only confirm that the victim was shot in the chest and transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he died.

One and a half year old Jose Antonio Navarro, is too young to understand that his dad will no longer comfort him when he cries. Or that he was in the car when his father was shot.

"He was in the backseat. He knew something happened, because he would say 'daddy, daddy. I want my dad,'" Martinez said.

Neighbors tried to busy him while mom talked to authorities. The description she provided to police of the men is that both were strangers. The shooter, she said, is tall and young. The second man was older. For Kenia, the reality of being a single mom has yet to sink in. She is now seeking the help of the community.

"Help us find them, so they can pay for what they did. No one deserves to die like this" she said.

Miami Police say the investigation continues. If you have any information that can help police you're urged to call Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
