Authorities are investigating a fire that swept through a pair of businesses early Monday in Miami.

The fire began around 2 a.m. at a variety store at Northeast 2nd Avenue and 59th Street, Miami Fire Rescue spokesman Lt. Ignatius Carroll said.

When firefighters arrived they found heavy smoke coming out of the store and flames on the rooftop, Carroll said.

Firefighters were able to get at the fire through a neighboring restaurant and stop it from spreading to a third business. It took about 25 minutes to get it under control, Carroll said.

"Unfortunately the store and the restaurant did suffer some smoke damage, but the variety store where the fire started had heavy fire damage," Carroll said.

Carroll said a kitten that the variety store owners kept inside couldn't be found and was feared dead. A lot of debris made the search more difficult, he said.

The variety store had closed around 7:30 or 8 p.m. Sunday, and no one was injured.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
