Teen Cyclist Dies After He's Struck by Hit-And-Run Driver in Oakland Park

Police looking for driver who hit 17-year-old, fled scene

Authorities are searching for a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a teen cyclist in Oakland Park Thursday night.

Gabriel Amaya, 17, was riding his bike in the crosswalk over the southbound lanes of Powerline road at Prospect Road when a light colored SUV or pickup truck struck his front tire around 9:40 p.m., the Broward Sheriff's Office said Friday.

Amaya was thrown off his bicycle and into the roadway. He was taken by Oakland Park Fire Rescue to Broward Health Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the vehicle stopped and got out of the car for a second then fled the scene, authorities said.

Authorities said they're looking for a 1995-1999 GMC or Chevrolet, believed to be light blue in color. It will have heavy damage to the left, front headlight, grill and side view mirror, the BSO said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Broward CrimeStoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
