Riverside Elementary Gets the First Michelle Obama Salad Bar

Michelle Obama talked health food with Miami kids

While her husband generally prefers junk food when he makes a stop in Miami, First Lady Michelle Obama visited the Magic City Monday to talk to kids about putting down the burgers and picking up a salad.

Obama visited fifth graders at Riverside Elementary in Little Havana to promote her "Let's Move!" exercise program that aims to reduce childhood obesity through exercise and eating healthy.

But Mrs. Obama came prepared to put her green where her mouth is. She brought the school and students a gift: a brand new salad bar.

The First Lady has been visiting schools across the country, encouraging cafeterias to add salad bars with fresh veggies from school gardens. She hopes her message encourages schools to install salad bars in cafeterias.

Her goal is 6,000 nationwide.

Well the first Obama-inspired salad bar is at Riverside Elementary. Officials unveiled the fresh vegetables during Obama's 15-minute speech to the 100 or so students.

Obama started "Let's Move!" after she began her own garden at the White House with the help of some students in Washington D.C.

One in three American children is overweight or obese, a condition that raises their risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other illnesses.

President Barack Obama made a pit stop for Cuban burgers during his last visit to Miami in October, telling the assembled press "We can't tell the First Lady."
