Angry Ex Sets Man's Home on Fire: Police

Fort Lauderdale woman starts blaze, tries to run over ex-husband

A Fort Lauderdale firefight came to an end with a woman behind bars and her ex-husband nearly run over and burned to death, police said.

Police say 26-year-old Mirca Gallumette set her ex-husband's home on fire and then tried to run over him with her car in the 2800 block of Southwest 4th Court Tuesday morning.

The wild scene happened after a long episode of problems between Gallumette and her ex-husband that even their neighbors have noticed for a while. Police say that ex-husband is lucky to be alive.

"It was flames and smoke," said neighbor Cherlene Cartwright noticing smoke in her neighborhood. "The car in the house was on fire."

Firefighters were able to put the fire out, and police say Gallumette never got far. They say she almost crashed into a fire truck before officers stopped and arrested her.

"She fled from the area and was apprehended about two blocks from the residence," says Officer Deanna Garcia.

Neighbors say this wasn't the first of the couple's troubles.

"I only see the police there every other day,” said a next door neighbor, who didn't want to be identified.

"There have been incidents in the past," said Officer Garcia.

Earlier Tuesday -- just before the house fire -- police say the two got into a physical fight at their children's elementary school. The lover's quarrel came to a halt with a very angry suspect in jail.

"It's sad. It's very sad it had to come to this,” said the next door neighbor.

The victim walked away from the attack with only minor injuries. His ex is charged with two counts of arson as well as aggravated assault and burglary. Police say she also violated a protection order when she showed up to the victim's home.

Her attorney's name wasn't immediately known.
