It’s Friday, August 23rd – and NBC 6 has the top stories you need to know for the day.

No. 1 - Keep your umbrella handy for the weekend across South Florida as higher rain chances stick around through Sunday – and keep that NBC 6 app handy for First Alert Doppler 6000 and any push alerts for severe weather.

No. 2 - A Davie teen was arrested Thursday after allegedly posting on social media that he wanted to "shoot up a school."

Davie police officials said the message was written by a Nova High School student on Discord, an app for gamers. A student reported the message to BSO. While in custody, the boy told detectives that he had no intent in following through with the threat and only "wanted people to feel the pain he felt."

No. 3 - A Miami-Dade judge has denied Mexican soap opera star Pablo Lyle's attempt to use Florida's so-called "Stand Your Ground" law to get a manslaughter charge dismissed.

After a day of testimony, Judge Alan Fine denied the motion by Lyle, who is accused of hitting 63-year-old Juan Hernandez during an alleged road rage incident earlier this year in Miami. Hernandez died days later in the hospital. If convicted, Lyle could face up to 15 years in prison.

No. 4 - Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro continued on Thursday to attack non-governmental organizations, repeating claims he made a day earlier that these groups were behind fires raging in the Amazon rainforest.

The growing threat to what some call "the lungs of the planet" has ignited a bitter dispute about who is to blame during the tenure of a leader who described Brazil's rainforest protections as an obstacle to economic development.

No. 5 – Only on 6, a South Florida doctor is being accused of extorting her 86-year-old patient after police say she got the man to sign over co-ownership of his home without his knowledge.

Lazaro Riesgo said Odalys Pilar Frontela was his primary care doctor for years and the person he trusted the most after the deaths of his wife and two children – which is why he was taken by surprise a few months ago when Frontela told him she was the co-owner of his east Hialeah home, which he owned for 40 years.

No. 6 – The Miami Hurricanes and Florida Gators are set to renew their rivalry on the football field Saturday night in Orlando – just the seventh time the foes have met since discontinuing their yearly meetings after the 1987 season.
