A French tourist drowned in the waters off Miami Beach early Monday, police said. The man, identified by police as 40-year-old Frederic Guillaume, had been swimming with friends when he didn't make it to shore.
The body of a French tourist who went missing while swimming in Miami Beach Monday morning has been found.
The swimmer, identified as 40-year-old Frederic Guillaume, went under the water in the area of Ocean Drive and 1st Street while swimming with a group of friends around 3:30 a.m., according to a Miami Beach Police report.
Miami Beach Police spokeswoman Det. Vivian Hernandez said the man was reported missing around 3:30 a.m.
According to the report, the group had tried to walk out further into the ocean but realized it was difficult just to stand.
The waves at the time were strong and not safe to be in, the report said. The group decided to get out of the water but it was difficult because of the current pulling them out.
Guillaume couldn't make his way to shore and disappeared into the ocean, the report said.
His friends called 911 after they couldn't find him, Hernandez said.
"They realized they were one short," Hernandez said.
His body was later found near shore in the area of Ocean Drive and 6th Street by a sanitation worker.
The Coast Guard and Miami Beach Fire Rescue had been searching by air and water early Monday.
The group is from France and were expected to leave Monday, the report said.
