Car Involved in Fatal Hit and Run Coral Gables Located: Police

Police executed a search warrant early Friday at a home where they believe the vehicle at the center of Thursday's deadly hit and run crash is located.

During the investigation late Thursday night into early Friday morning, police say no one showed up at the home at 8500 Southwest 46th Street in southwest Miami-Dade.

Police say the Nissan Altima parked at that house has extensive damage that is consistent with Thursday's fatal hit and run crash at the corner of Bird Road and Granada Boulevard. Police say it appears that the driver tried to hide the damaged car, whcih has a shattered front windshield.

"The car was hidden behind a home, behind a fence, in order to try to be concealed so that anybody driving by, a neighbor, would not notice due to the extensive amount of front end damage that this vehicle sustained," said Officer Kelly Denham of the Coral Gables Police Department.

Sometime overnight Thursday, a bicyclist was struck and killed and left in the road to die in Coral Gables.

Denham told NBC 6 South Florida on Thursday that an officer happened to be traveling eastbound on Bird Road around 3:13 a.m. and spotted the victim's deceased body still lying in the street.

The officer called for backup, and a responding officer found the mangled bicycle about four blocks west of the victim's body.

Denham told NBC 6 South Florida that police do not know whether the bicycle fell from the vehicle, or if the driver manually dislodged the bike.

Police are describing the scene as an active fatal hit and run investigation.

Despite the crash site's proximity to the University of Miami, Denham says police do not believe the bicyclist was a student, and that the victim appears to be an older male.

As crews responded to the scene, the westbound lanes of Bird Road were closed, as was the intersection of Granada Boulevard and University Drive.

All roads have since been reopened.

Police ask that anyone with information contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
