Bimini Island Air Flights Cancelled, Permanently

FAA shuts down Bimini Island Air

If you're planning on flying to the Bahamas via Bimini Island Air, make new arrangements.

The Fort Lauderdale airline broke strict aircraft rules and lost its operating certificate during an emergency revocation by the Federal Aviation Administration, officials said.

BIA surrendered its operating certificate on July 1.

According to the FAA BIA operated and advertised 15 scheduled flights between Ft. Lauderdale and the Bahamas during March and April of 2011.

Since BIA is an on-demand operator, it is not authorized to use its 30-seat aircraft for scheduled flights. Instead, the airline operated as a scheduled airline, which has different rules than an on-demand operator, the report stated.

BIA has petitioned for a review of the emergency nature of the revocation, which also served as an appeal.

The petition and the appeal are awaiting to be reviewed by the National Transportation Safety Board.

BIA was not immediately available for comment on Monday.
