Bomb Squad Responds to Possible Explosive Device at Wilton Manors Home

A bomb squad responded to a Wilton Manors home Monday after a man had a possible explosive device Monday morning after neighbors complained of a brush fire in the backyard of John Gregory Knepper's home, officials said.

The incident was reported at a home in the area of Northwest 24th Street and 3rd Avenue.

When officials arrived at the house, they found shell casings in the pit. After further investigation, police found an explosive device in Knepper's bedroom and the bomb squad was called in.

Officials said the area was evacuated and the bomb squad was detonating the possible device. Three nearby schools - Pace Center for Girls, Somerset Academy and Wilton Manors Elementary - were warned to stay away from the neighbors until the device was detonated.

The Fort Lauderdale bomb squad took over the investigation and took Knepper in for questioning.

No other information was immediately known.
