Broward County Public School officials say they are ready for the first day of school on Monday, August 21st, which also happens to be the same day as the solar eclipse.
Broward County Public Schools will operate on regular opening and dismissal hours for the first day of school.
As a precautionary measure, all outdoor activities at all schools between the hours of 1:30 and 4:30 will be moved indoors. Outdoor activities can resume after 4:30 p.m.
School officials are only allowing viewing devices recognized by NASA and the American Astronomical Society with a solar filter, like “eclipse glasses.” Any devices made at home will not be allowed for use.
BCPS officials are encouraging drivers to be cautious during pick-up and dismissal, as distracted drivers and pedestrians are a likelihood during the phenomenon.
Additionally, school officials say parents should speak with their children about the eclipse and the dangers of looking directly at the sun, and the potential damage it can cause to their eyes.
American Heritage's Plantation and Boca campuses canceled the first day of classes Monday because of the eclipse.
