Armed Robbery, Shooting in Fort Lauderdale Leads to Lockdown of School

A nearby armed robbery and shooting kept students and others on the campus of one Broward County school from being able to leave Tuesday morning.

Shortly after 8 a.m., a masked suspect walked into a store near the 800 block of Southwest 27th Avenue. He opened fire on the clerk, who was shot in the cheek but will be okay.

"The clerk returned fire, shot the suspect multiple times," Fort Lauderdale Police Det. Tracy Figone said. "At that time the suspect fled the area and later we located him just east of the convenience store."

The suspect was taken to a local hospital, where his condition was unknown.

As a result of the incident, nearby St. Thomas Aquinas was placed on lockdown while an investigation begun into the shooting. The lockdown was lifted a short time later.

The incident remains under investigation.
