DNA Ties Man to 20-Year-Old Rape Case in Central Florida: Officials

Authorities in central Florida say they've identified one of three suspects in a 20-year-old gang rape case.

The Daytona Beach News Journal reports that DNA has led Volusia County Sheriff's Office investigators to 42-year-old Robert Sheridan Haar. The Portage, Wisconsin, man was arrested last week and awaits extradition to Florida.

Officials say a 14-year-old girl was walking through a wooded area after becoming separated from her friends in October 1997 when she encountered three men. She told investigators the men raped her, threatening to kill her if she resisted.

Haar's DNA was entered into a national database last year after he was arrested in Wisconsin for an unrelated charge, and authorities say it matched a sample from the 1997 rape case. A second profile was also collected from the victim, but no match has been discovered.
