Deputy Shoots Man Who Drove at Him: Officials

A north Florida sheriff's deputy shot a 72-year-old man who had just been released from jail.

Columbia County Sheriff's spokesman Murray Smith says Charles Schoener is recovering at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville following the Tuesday shooting.

The Gainesville Sun reports Cpl. Randy Harrison responded to an ongoing dispute between Schoener and some tenants who apparently owed him back rent. Harrison fired his pistol when Schoener drove his pickup truck toward deputies.

Smith says Schoener was arrested Monday when he ran his vehicle into a tenant while trying to evict them from his property. He was released from jail on Tuesday and returned to the property, where he planned to use an ax to cut power to the home.

Harrison is on administrative leave pending an investigation.
