Fabien Cousteau's ongoing underwater living experiment in the Florida Keys has included filmmaking, online chats with classrooms worldwide, marine research and an underwater painting lesson.
The artist Wyland visited Aquarius Reef Base last week and painted a portrait of Cousteau's grandfather, ocean exploration pioneer Jacques Cousteau, from the sea floor using environmentally friendly paints on canvas.
Cousteau and researchers from Florida International University dove June 1 to Aquarius to study the coral reef. To mark the 31-day mission's mid-point this week, the FIU researchers returned to the surface. They were replaced by a team from Northeastern University.
Cousteau also was visited this week by actor Adrian Grenier and retired NASA astronaut Clayton Anderson.
Cousteau is scheduled to return to the surface July 2.
