Hallandale Beach Police Arrest Man in Connection to Fatal Hit-and-Run

Hallandale Beach Police say they have arrested a man in connection to a fatal hit-and-run collision.

Hallandale Beach Police on Tuesday said they have arrested a man in connection to a fatal hit-and-run, which killed a 12-year-old girl.

Shania Jackson died Sunday as a result of the injuries she suffered in the Nov. 18 incident.

According to police, witnesses said Jackson was crossing the road in the 600 block of Foster Road when a car swerved toward her. She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Jackson was heading towards Foster Park when she was struck – and that's where the community held a vigil Monday night.

Fernando G. Mayers, 25, a Hallandale Beach resident, faces charges including vehicular homicide, crash involving death/leaving the scene and habitual traffic offender. He turned himself in to police on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.

Mayers has a very long wrap sheet including 24 arrests with a lo to charges, some of them felonies, drug charges, others were driving without a license.

Police said Mayers was a habitual offender and because of that, this fatal hit-and-run is a first-dgree felony and carries heavier penalties.
